A new report released today by the American Hospital
Association (AHA) highlights the substantial economic contribution that
hospitals generate for cities and states around the country – and communities
in Indiana mirror this national trend. Nationally, hospitals employ 5.6 million
people and create nearly $2.6 trillion in economic activity. Communities in
Indiana rely heavily on Hoosier hospitals, employing more than 128,000 people and
creating more than $37 billion in economic activity.
“This report
demonstrates the powerful impact hospitals bring not only to their local
communities, but to our state’s economy as a whole,” said Doug Leonard,
president of the Indiana Hospital Association. “Our 164 hospitals across the
state work 24 hours a day, seven days a week to deliver care to those in need.
In addition to the health benefits we provide to our patients, we’re proud to
leave a positive economic footprint on the communities we serve.”
Hospitals are
an economic mainstay, providing jobs and economic activity in communities
across the country. Additionally, hospitals in Indiana:
·
Provide
stability and growth during times of recession
·
Support
an additional 264,489 jobs elsewhere in the Indiana economy through “ripple
effects”
·
Are
the second largest source of private sector jobs nationally
·
Spend
more than $8.3 billion on wages and benefits
·
Spend
nearly $17.9 billion on goods and services from other businesses in Indiana
