August 22, 2023 (INDIANAPOLIS) — For the third year in a row, Indiana has ranked among the best states in the nation for making hospital prices transparent. Turquoise Health, the nation’s leading health care transparency solution, has again named Indiana the fourth most transparent state, according to its recent Price Transparency Impact Report analyzing 2023 data. According to the report, Indiana hospitals received an average transparency score of 4.5 out of 5. Only three states (Vermont, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania) received a higher score.
“For years, the Indiana General Assembly has prioritized price transparency measures to ensure every Hoosier has the cost and quality information they need to make informed decisions about their care,” said State Senator Ed Charbonneau, Chair of the Senate Health and Provider Services Committee. “I’m proud of Indiana’s hospitals for becoming a national leader in these efforts according to this new report. Price transparency across the board – from hospitals to health insurance companies to drug manufacturers – will be critical in our statewide effort to lower health care costs.”
Indiana Hospital Association (IHA) President Brian Tabor says Indiana’s high ranking is the culmination of years of hard work put in by the state’s hospitals.
“Indiana hospitals are committed to making health care more affordable and greater transparency will only fuel these efforts,” said Tabor. “Across the state, hospitals have added staff and resources to provide price estimate services to patients and continue to develop online tools to make this information more accessible and easier to understand.”
IHA began its transparency effort in 2015 by launching an online consumer tool called mycareINsight.org to make hospital price and quality information publicly available to consumers. The association continues to update the site, which now serves as a link to hospitals’ price information for common shoppable services, out-of-pocket price estimator tools where available, standard charges for all items and services, and more.
“While hospital pricing data is a great starting point for consumers, it only tells part of the story,” said Tabor. “We call on other health industry leaders to provide an equal level of transparency to drive down costs across the board.”
Indiana has maintained its high ranking for hospital price transparency since 2021, ranking fourth in the nation in both Turquoise Health’s 2022 Price Transparency Impact report and in a separate study led by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2021.
