We take care of our own
In recent years, Indiana—and Indiana hospitals—have been dramatically affected by flooding, tornadoes, and other natural disasters. Thanks to the Indiana Hospital Employee Disaster Relief Fund, IHA has been able to help some of our colleagues get back on their feet.
Following a devastating July 2008 flood that swamped cities in eastern central Indiana, IHA established the Indiana Hospital Employee Disaster Relief Fund to help hospital employees weather the financial strain of their hospitals’ temporary closure and the damage to their own homes.
The Origins of The Fund
The Indiana Hospital Employee Disaster Relief Fund was made possible by a $25,000 donation from Hancock Regional Hospital in Greenfield in 2008. Since then, through their generous gifts, numerous individuals and hospitals have grown and helped sustain the fund over the course of the last decade. Thanks to our donors, we’ve been able to help our colleagues in their time of need.
Since its founding, the Hospital Employee Disaster Relief Fund has helped health care organizations throughout the state recover from setbacks beyond their control, donating more than $220,000. For example:
- In March 2012, when tornadoes tore through southern Indiana, a call for contributions generated $165,500 in donations from hospitals and individuals. Ten hospitals that identified impacted employees received funds to help those individuals.
- In November 2013, central Indiana was impacted by tornadoes and 48 hospital employees were identified as in need of immediate assistance.
- In August 2016, Kokomo, Indiana was hit by tornadoes and assistance was provided.
At this time, the Employee Disaster Relief Fund has $76,000 available for future disasters. Please consider having your hospital contribute to the fund so IHA is immediately able to provide assistance to our employees in need.
