Past Leadership

IHA has benefited from nearly a century of exceptional leadership.

Between visionary and devoted presidents—IHA has only had four in the last 58 years—and an annual influx of new leadership through the role of IHA’s Chairman, the Association has flourished over the course of the last century.

We are proud of the men and women who have led IHA through the constantly evolving American health care landscape of the last 100 years. Their expertise and experience has not only strengthened IHA, it has made Indiana’s hospitals safer, more solvent and more prepared for the challenges ahead.

PAST  IHA PRESIDENTS:

Douglas J. Leonard, FACHE (President, 2007—2017)
As former CEO of Columbus Regional Hospital, Doug Leonard received national awards for his innovative leadership style and achievements in quality and patient safety. After taking on the role of IHA president, he continued his mission.  Under his leadership, IHA:

  • Continued to develop the Indiana Patient Safety Center
  • Strengthened its data collection and analysis tools, with an emphasis on transparency
  • Built stronger relationships with members
  • Intensified its workforce development efforts
  • Added new education programs

Kenneth G. Stella (President, 1984–2007):
In early 1984, Ken Stella was serving as the administrator of Morgan County Memorial Hospital in Martinsville when he was elected by the IHA board as its second president. With 16 years of hospital leadership under his belt, Ken was uniquely prepared to lead the association and its members into an era of:

  • Deregulation
  • Heightened competition
  • Changing delivery systems and physician relations
  • Transition from institutional models to business-like models
Ken’s outgoing, gregarious style was ideal for building the grassroots network of the Stella era. IHA became more externally focused under his leadership, with increased emphasis on the involvement of members, hospital trustees, and elected officials. When he retired in 2007, IHA had been transformed into a lean, focused, highly respected national organization.

Elton TeKolste (President, 1960–1983):
Elton "Tek" TeKolste was appointed the first CEO of IHA in 1960. An accountant by trade, Tek's analysis and predictions of crucial hospital concerns such as reimbursement and cost containment demonstrated his unique quality of foresight.

Under his leadership, the association gained a national reputation for dealing with the collective issues of hospitals. Tek’s contribution to the industry, and to IHA in particular, is honored each year through the TeKolste Luncheon at IHA’s Annual Meeting.
