January 1, 2017 was an important deadline for Indiana hospitals with more than 50 beds: It marked the beginning of mandatory involvement in a Patient Safety Organization (PSO) or a similar evidence-based health care improvement system. Thanks to IHA’s partnership with the Michigan Health and Hospital Association’s (MHA) Keystone Center PSO, IHA members who choose to join the PSO can become compliant with the new Medicare & Medicaid Services patient safety standards.

• Affiliation and collaboration with other state and national PSOs for national benchmarking
• New reporting domains designed for events from the emergency department and for reporting root cause analysis, including real-time strength of recommended actions
• Biennial integrated culture and employee engagement survey administration
  
• Training on the National Patient Safety Foundation's RCA squared process for more effective root cause analysis
  
• Patient Safety toolkits, along with other educational and training resources:
• Access to state and national patient safety experts
• Eligibility for the quarterly MHA Speak Up! Award

MHA Keystone Center PSO: Certified and Experienced

Since becoming a certified PSO in 2009, the MHA Keystone Center has successfully developed educational opportunities, safety improvements and data collection and analysis tools for more than 100 hospitals and health systems across Michigan. These efforts help health care leaders and clinicians share experiences and identify areas in need of change to improve patient safety and health care quality.
