Our patients are counting on us to reduce pressure ulcers.

Painful, expensive and potentially deadly, hospital-acquired pressure ulcers are a real threat to the well-being of our patients—and to a hospital’s bottom line:

In 2009, more than 60,000 patients died from complications related to pressure ulcers.
According to research conducted by Reddy, Gill & Rochon, treating a single pressure ulcer patient can cost up to $70,000.
Pressure ulcers affect more than 2.5 million patients in the U.S.

In other words, pressure ulcers pose a patient safety challenge that IHA and our member hospitals must address head-on. The good news is: we’ve already made great strides.

From September 2015 to September 2016, the IHA Hospital Engagement Network 2.0 helped reduce pressure ulcers by 81.4 percent. However, we can do even better—by educating caregivers to be aware of the signs and symptoms of pressure ulcers, how to relieve irritation for patients and strategies to help reduce them even further.
